How long should you stay on Koh Lipe, Thailand?

Koh Lipe is a remote island and feels like paradise as you step out of your resort straight onto the white sand beaches. As much as we would all love to stay on this idyllic island forever, we all know this won’t be possible.

The island is quite small and apart from swimming, snorkelling and diving, there isn’t much else to do. For this reason, we will recommend between 3 to 4 full days on the island. This will give you enough time to relax on the beach and even do a day trip to some of the surrounding islands in the area.

Where to stay on Koh Lipe?

Koh Lipe has three main beaches known as Sunset Beach, Sunrise Beach and Pattaya Beach. So where should you book your hotel? Let’s look at each of these locations:

Sunset Beach

Sunset beach is located on the western side of the island. This beach is smaller than what we expected and there are only two resorts in this area. This beach is great for sunsets as the name suggests however this isn’t the best beach on the island.

During high tide, there is almost no beach left to sit on and during low tide, the sea is foamy and there is black oil on the beach which we assume is because of the boats in the area. This is strange since the other beaches on the island don’t show any signs of oil.

Sunset beach is only a 10-minute walk from Pattaya beach but you might have to take a motorbike taxi to the walking street and sunrise beach. If you are looking for a quiet place to stay on the island we would recommend Sunset Beach.

But if you are looking for the beautiful white sand beaches that Koh Lipe is known for, maybe rather consider Sunrise or Pattaya beach.

Sunrise Beach

Sunrise beach is located on the eastern side of the island. It is a large beach that stretches over 1.5 km long. You want to stay here if you are looking for a quiet area that isn’t too far from all the restaurants.

Almost all the resorts along Sunrise beach are located right on the beach so you can walk straight from your room into the water. There are restaurants located near walking street on the island but the rest of sunrise beach is undeveloped.

At Sunrise Beach there are a lot of longtail boats that can take you to nearby islands for day trips and snorkelling.

Pattaya Beach

Pattaya Beach is the main beach on the island. This is the first beach you will see when you arrive since all the speedboats stop here. The beach is also 1.5 km long.

Pattaya beach is the best of both worlds. There are a few resorts built on the beach and there are many restaurants. This is also where the walking street is located which is basically the heart of the island.

Convenient stores, pharmacies, souvenir shops, restaurants and bars can be found on the walking street. This beach is perfect during the day and it doesn’t have as many longtail boats as Sunrise beach however at night it can get busy and noisy.

This is where we would recommend you stay if you want to be close to all the restaurants and convenience stores and just want to have an absolutely beautiful beach right at your feet.

Koh Lipe is not as touristy as the islands closer to Phuket and Krabi. Most of the tourists that visit here are local tourists. The small island of Koh Lipe is also limited by the number of rooms that are available on the island.
